Ripple Color Technique

Ripple is a natural looking, ‘grown out’ Balayage effect… perfect on shoulder length or longer with or without layers, pre colored or not and, works well on all hair types.

Ripple Color

1. Create approx. 1 inch deep rippled, horizontal sections as seen in the diagrams, if the hair is fine make them shallow and if very abundant make them deeper. They should reach the crown area across the top of the head and end at random positions, as seen in the diagram.

2. Begin in the first horizontal section above the left ear: place a foil at the end of the section as seen in the diagram.

3. Take a thin slice across the section, lay it onto the foil and, using a long bristle brush apply Formula 1 about 2½ ” from the top edge of the foil through to the ends and thoroughly saturate, do this on every section.

4. Now take a clean, dry short bristle brush.

5. Hold the brush vertically at 90° to the hair and using a one way (with the grain of the hair) vertical stroke, work your way across the slice to delete the hard line caused by deposit of product. Clean the brush off and repeat the motion so there is a soft, merged transition between the dry hair above the line and the hair that is wet with product on the rest of the slice.

6. Cover with foil to protect the merged areas.

It may be necessary to clip the foils in place to avoid the section slipping to the side.

It’s important to keep the hair over-directed and wrapped over the top of the head to maintain the soft merged effect between the light and the dark areas.

7. Take another thin slice, place it directly on top of the foil and do the same.

8. Repeat the method throughout the section until complete and cover with foil.

9. Move to the first horizontal section above the right ear: place a foil at the end of the section, use Formula 1 and as before apply it the same way.

10. Continue throughout the section, complete and cover with foil.

11. Move to the next horizontal sections on each side and, using Formula 2 repeat the action throughout the sections as before.

12. When complete cover with a foil, move to the center section, choose either Formula and repeat the application as before.

13. At room temperature, allow the color to develop until the desired level has been achieved.

13. When done use Redken Color Extend to shampoo and condition then style.

This recommended formula works well on all Natural Levels and pre colored hair. Color common sense applies that the darker the shade the warmer the results.
