Ask the client questions about their lifestyle, profession, how good they are with their hair and the time and $$ they are willing to spend on their hair. Ask them to show you pictures of color and style, which they do or do not like… remembering, a picture tells a thousand words. This will give you a guide as to what can and cannot be achieved.
